Diamond Wedding Sets - History and Lore
Diamond wedding sets are the traditional symbol of the union of man and woman.
Rings have been used for centuries to show your intentions and, of course, we all know the never ending round shape of the ring symbolizes the never ending love of the married couple. Diamonds have long represented commitment and long lasting love. Among their magical properties is the ability to enhance the wearers natural charm and beauty. It is also believed that wearing diamonds can protect against illness, and strengthened the kidneys as well as the reproductive organs.
Although diamond wedding sets may be a more modern symbol of marriage, the exchange of rings dates back to the Roman Empire where they were a public symbol of the contract of marriage between a man and woman. This exchange is used in most wedding ceremonies today, where they are blessed, and removing the bands is said to bring bad luck. The rings are worn on the 4th finger of the left hand as it was believed that the vein in that finger ran straight to the heart
In early times only 1 ring was worn to symbolize marriage but in the 13th century, the Pope declared there would be a waiting period between engagement and marriage and thus, the engagement ring was born! From those early times we still use rings as the symbol of marriage and diamond wedding sets are a common way to pair rings for everlasting beauty and love.
Modern diamond wedding sets come in matching pairs of rings that have the same style and are made to go together. They can be simple or very ornate. Some have a band with an opening in the middle that accepts the solitaire engagement ring and looks like 1 big ring when worn together, others simply sit next to each other and complement each others design.
When caring for your diamond wedding sets, remember to store them in a soft pouch away from other jewelry when you are not wearing them. Diamonds are rather hardy and will stand up to mild cleansers. Remember when removing your jewelry, never pull it off by the stone as this can cause it to come loose! Periodically checking the stone in the setting is a good idea as you can avoid losing a loose stone this way. Have your diamonds cleaned professionally once a year and have the jewelry check the setting for damaged prongs and loose stones at that time.
