The Pink Diamond
The Pink diamond is the most rare and valuable of the colored diamonds.
They come in a wide range of shades from a pale, rose pink to a deep raspberry. Natural colored diamonds are mined out of the earth with these color variations, but they can also be treated to change the color. One must be careful when buying colored diamonds as the naturally colored ones are worth quite a bit more than the treated ones.
With white diamonds, the less color they have the more valuable they are but the pink diamond becomes more valuable with the more color they have. The darker shades are worth more than the lighter shades. Other than that, colored diamonds are graded by the same methods used to grade colorless diamonds.
Cut does not refer to the shape of the stone as some think, but to the facets that are cut into the stone from which light is reflected. There is a precise formula that cutters follow to insure the diamond is cut to show the maximum brilliance of the stone. Several grades of cut affect the value for pink diamonds, but the appearance is the same except in the case of the Fair and Poor cuts which do look inferior to the naked eye.. The cuts, in order of value are: Ideal, Premium, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor.
Clarity is the blemishes and imperfections in the stone. These can be inclusions inside the stone such as cracks, bubbles, non diamond minerals or surface flaws such as chips, scratches and pits. A flawless diamond has none of these and is very As with everything, there is a grading system for clarity to be considered with buying pink diamonds.
F - Flawless, very rare and valuable
IF - Internally Flawless - no inclusions but there may be some surface flaws again very rare and valuable!
VVS1-VVS2- Very Very Slightly included - minor inclusions
VS1-VS2- Very Slightly included - minor inclusions still but a bit more than the grade above
SI1-SI2 - Slightly included - slight inclusions a bit more than the grade above
I1-I2-I3 - Included - poor quality
Color is very important to the value of pink diamonds - the more color the more value..
Carat weight or size is the final criteria for value. Typically, the bigger the diamond the more it costs, however a small stone that has a excellent cut and clarity can be more expensive that a large stone with poor cut and clarity
